How much do medical students know about infection control?

医学部教育の変化により、学生は教育の早い段階から患者との直接的な接触をもつようになっている。本研究の目的は、英国のバーミンガム大学医学部3年生の、感染制御策および手技についての知識を評価することである。半構造化質問票※を医学生に配布した。学生322名のうち156名から、すべてに回答済みの質問票が返送された（48％）。これらの結果は、医学生の58％がアルコールハンドジェルの正しい適応を知らず、35％がグローブの正しい使用方法を知らず、50％が下痢・嘔吐エピソード後の病棟勤務除外期間（exclusion period）を知らないことを示していた。医学生の64％が手指消毒についての正式な教育を、12％が非公式の教育を、19％が両方の教育を受け、5％が手指消毒の教育を全く受けなかったと回答した。医学生の49％は、課程の中で感染制御の比重が不十分であると考えていた。これらの結果は、感染制御に関する医学生の知識について、懸念を増大させるものである。当大学では現在、感染制御の教育と評価の、より構造化されたモデルの必要性について検討を行っている。

監訳者コメント：
医師の手指衛生のコンプライアンスが医療従事者の中でも悪い方であるとする報告が散見されるが、だとすれば医学生時代からの教育は非常に重要である。その意味で、本論文は（イギリスの状況とはいえ）医学生に対する感染制御教育の不十分さを明確に示すデータであり、是非ご一読頂きたい。
