世界中の医療現場が医療関連感染の問題に直面している。感染率は国ごとに、および同一国内でも、医療資源、介護職員および医療従事者の関心、患者の社会経済的状態によって様々である。最近の研究発表によると、医療関連感染の10～70％は予防可能である。手指衛生、手袋およびガウンの着用、およびバリアナーシングに関するガイドラインの遵守不履行が問題であり、不必要な感染制御対策には費用がかかる。感染制御関連の国の法律や地域、国、および世界の基準やガイドラインは、直接関係のない国々に対しても影響力をもつ。これらは感染リスクの評価に基づくべきであり、不必要にコストを増加させてはならない。感染制御の専門家の教育の継続には、国際感染管理協会（International Federation of Infection Control；IFIC）と国レベルの感染制御関連学会が重要な役割を担っている。

Lowbury Lectureは、偉大な臨床微生物学者にして詩人としても著名なEd Lowbury先生を記念して、感染管理に顕著な業績を残したと認められるプロフェッショナルが病院感染学会（Hospital Infection Society）の年次集会で講演するプログラムである。IFICの役割が強調されている点が注目される。
