指輪により皮膚表面の細菌数が増加する。手洗いによって細菌数は減少するが（P＝0.05）、指輪の下の細菌数は指輪周囲の皮膚や反対側の手より多い。手洗い前に指輪をはずすと細菌数は減少するものの、依然として指輪周囲の皮膚または反対側の手よりは多い。理想的には、手術スタッフは指輪を使用すべきではない。しかし、指輪を着けている場合には、手術の手洗い前にはずすべきである。
