指輪により皮膚表面の細菌数が増加する。手洗いによって細菌数は減少するが(P=0.05)、指輪の下の細菌数は指輪周囲の皮膚や反対側の手より多い。手洗い前に指輪をはずすと細菌数は減少するものの、依然として指輪周囲の皮膚または反対側の手よりは多い。理想的には、手術スタッフは指輪を使用すべきではない。しかし、指輪を着けている場合には、手術の手洗い前にはずすべきである。

比較的シンプルな論文であるが、病院職員への手指衛生の指導時に示すことができる根拠のひとつとなる。この論文を知っておくと便利である。
