Standards of clinical waste management in UK hospitals

大量の医療廃棄物の取り扱い方法を英国の26の病院で観察した。一般の人が自由に近づくことができる区域に廃棄物用カートが保管されている状態、および個々のカートに鍵が掛けられていない状態がまれではなかった。多数の医療廃棄物用カートとカート保管区域が補修不足の状態にあった。病院における医療廃棄管理の根本的な改善が、以下の理由で必要である。（1）不正かつ不適切な医療廃棄物への接触による感染の可能性の低減、および廃棄した医薬品との接触による有害作用の最小化。（2）英国の保健安全法で課せられた注意義務の遵守。（3）病院衛生の一般的な水準に関する懸念の払拭。

監訳者コメント：
医療廃棄物のトレーサビリティの問題提議である。わが国においては、地方自治体や医師会により医療廃棄物の取り扱いが一様でない。わが国にこそ、こうした実態調査が必要ではなかろうか？
