ネブライザーは、病院内の呼吸器疾患患者に対し、エアロゾル化した薬物を投与するために不可欠である。病院において、ネブライザーの微生物汚染は医療関連感染症のリスクを増加させており、効果的な感染予防制御の実践を進展させるために、汚染源を特定することの重大な必要性を示している。微生物叢に基づいた培養に依存しない微生物供給源の革新的な特定技術の使用によって、病院室内環境はネブライザーの微生物汚染物質に関与する重要な供給源であることが確認され、標的を絞った汚染除去戦略を開発し、感染予防制御の実践の有効性を高めるための、重要な情報がもたらされる。

監訳者コメント

ネブライザー内の微生物叢を培養によらず、革新的な DNA シーケンスベースの分析ツールである SourceTracker を活用して調査した報告。ネブライザーの微生物叢には屋内環境が平均 40%程度、人の供給源(腸、口腔、皮膚の微生物叢)は合計で 10%程度であり、ネブライザーの微生物汚染の最も重要な供給源は屋内環境であることがわかる。
